Equipment for housing day geckos

Enclosures

Day geckos are aboreal and should be kept in taller enclosures. Front opening doors are important as you do not want to approach a day gecko from above.

Tip: I suggest getting in the habit of checking where the gecko/geckos are before opening the doors.

Plenty of structure to climb on (other than the glass) greenery and foliage for coverage will make your gecko more comfortable and more visible. Live plants are best, but fake plants are better than open space.

UV and Lighting

Day geckos originate from a tropical climate and are active during the daytime. A good quality UV light should be supplied.

I recommend Arcadia T5 HO (6%UV) or equivalent. UV should be provided for 10 hours per day. Proper UV allows for natural production of vitamin D3, which is important for Calcium absorption. No additional D3 should be supplemented if proper UV is provided.

In addition a full spectrum light for plants and to simulate daylight is recommended. I use Jungle dawn led.

Temperatures and Heating

Daytime temperatures in the enclosure should be mid 80s in the upper area, mid 70s at ground level. A focused basking spot around 90°F should be provided.

I use nano dome fixtures with 25w basking bulbs to create a basking spot.

As long as temps remain above 60°F then no overnight heating is required.

Diet and Feeding

Day geckos will eat a varied diet including fruits, pollen, nectar, insects and more.

CB geckos will do well on a prepared gecko diet. Pangea. Repashy or similar as the main diet.

I provide dusted feeders once a week for enrichment and to provide the supplements. Calcium

Calcium with magnesium

Reptile multivitamin.

I keep cultures of flightless fruit flies and bean weevils as a regular supply. Soldier flies, mealworms and crickets can be used as long as appropriately sized for the gecko.

Optional equipment (Time savers)

Mistking is quality equipment and makes it easier to adjust humidity and keep geckos hydrated through condensation or droplets.

Kasa allows for control of individual plugs through the App. Adjusting timer programs is much easier and more convenient.

Day Gecko Basic Information

Day geckos come in all sorts of colors and sizes. They can be as small as 2.5" full grown (Lygodactylus conraui) or up to 11"+ for the giant day gecko (Phelsuma grandis)

Average lifespan is reported to be 10 to 15 years.

Day geckos are fast, agile and have excellent grip thanks to the pads on their toes that provide lots of traction on almost any surface.

Day geckos rely on their excellent vision to spot predators and their ability to quickly hide when needed as a first defense. As a second defence they are capable of dropping their tails if over stressed. They do regrow lost tails in time.

3rd never grip a day gecko because as a last resort they are capable of losing the top layer of scales to slip out of a predators grip. These will also regrow, but may be noticeable after. Day geckos need to be handled open palm, which I only recommend for experienced handlers.
